It was by a stroke of luck that we chanced upon an awesome deal on Zuji and hurray, we're back in Tokyo in less than a year! Included Hakone in our itinerary this time because I was sorely disappointed that I didn't get to see Mt. Fuji (and experience onsen) the first time. I mean, traveling Japan is just incomplete without seeing Mt. Fuji!

It was a much needed getaway for me too, away from the commitments and shortfall of expectations.

6 days including traveling time was simply too short - in addition to shorter day time in winter, we had to do away with some of our original plans in order to prioritize the sights we haven't been to. And what a right decision we've made!

Hakone is such a lovely place I'm so glad we made it a point to venture out of the Tokyo city! Cable cars and ropeways are part of its everyday transportation which make navigating and exploring around Hakone so much more adventurous and exciting. We opted for a ryokan stay and it was such an indulgent experience!

This is bliss. Outdoor onsen in the middle of the night at subzero degrees was an experience not to be missed! I could get used to this everyday.

On our first day in Hakone, the ropeway to Ōwakudani was closed by the time we rushed there. The beautiful sunset at Sounzan made up for our disappointment despite the wasted trip and time.

I've graduated!

I've officially graduated from school! The graduation ceremony, which most proud parents including mine eagerly look forward to attend and celebrate the joyous occasion of their kids gaining (financial) independence, officially marks the end of my 16 years of academic journey and paper chase.

It has been a long ride indeed, from back during pre-school days how my mum was reciting timetables to me during bedtime hoping to subconsciously rub some mathematics in me, to sending me off to kindergarten and then pretending to leave but was actually constantly peering into the classroom to make sure I have settled down in class and was interacting fine with my classmates, to going great extents to make sure I get into a good primary school... and then it was the start of the paper chase. The PSLE, GCE 'O' Level and GCE 'A' Level examinations, where like many of my peers, preparation involved completing a long list of assessment books and practicing other top schools' examination papers. Friends come and go, some friendships were forged and some were broken, puppy loves, crushes, hanging out till late in shopping malls ... those were the days back in secondary school. Which also resulted in the peak of my rebellion and I took a stumble during the 'O' Level examination. Despite the tough price to pay and humbling lesson to learn, all roads lead to Rome and I'm more than thankful I emerged unscathed and got into my desired university choice.

University was a significant milestone, I was thrilled at having not to touch Science subjects ever again, yes to no more Chemistry and my most hated Physics classes! It was a fast paced environment with a steep learning curve, having to grow up in the pseudo reality of working life, grasping and juggling with many more things, as well as grabbing the opportunities when they present themselves to you. Internships, overseas community service, overseas study trip, exchange program, those were the good and fun times!

Seriously, all credits to the two most important people in my life. I wouldn't have been able to accomplish all these without them. This is THEIR big day!

Universal Studios Singapore!

With a penchant for doing touristy things, I was really excited about going to Universal Studios on my birthday! Applied for my first annual leave despite barely passing my one-month mark at work to avoid the weekend crowd but it was surprisingly still very crowded on a Monday morning. Nevertheless, I was all psyched and raring to go!

This was our first ride since friends strongly recommended it! I have to confess that being a scaredy cat I actually wiki-ed the entire flow of the ride so that I could expect those sudden accelerations and plunges but it all happened too fast for me to react! Very fun and thrilling I would say!

Shrek in 4D was awesome! I'm not a huge fan of 3D but the effects for this animation were good! Love those cheeky physical effects too

The most thrilling ride of the theme park but unfortunately I only had the guts to take the Human track of Battlestar Galactica. I think we stood there for the longest time watching the roller coaster go up and down over and over again, while trying to muster our courage and prepare ourselves for the ride. Almost chickened out when the ride was delayed due to technical difficulties and had to go for 5 test runs! So proud of myself to have conquered it!

I was genuinely impressed that USS Singapore have a queuing system in place for photo taking with mascots. Having been to Tokyo Disneyland where they only paid attention to kids, I was delighted to be able to queue for a photo with my favorite people! It would have been a complete experience if I was able to catch hold of Puss in Boots and Kungfu Panda!

A new beginning

Hello, corporate world.
Finally signed and had my fate sealed in the contract. It was a good two months of unemployment and bumming around, being free like a bird after my last academic exams and having the liberty of time to chill and spend quality time with myself, family and friends. There was a slight regret of not being able to go on a "graduation trip" like everyone else, despite already having my fair share of traveling and fun during exchange. Then again, I knew that if I were to go for a short trip, I would probably be worrying about getting employed at the back of my mind, which would defeat the purpose of traveling!

Anyway, I can never be more grateful that this job search has come to an end. The anxiety and frustration of not getting any calls for interviews after sending in countless applications is something I wouldn't want to experience anytime soon again. The job hunting process has taught me one thing: It's damn important to have the right contacts to tap into. Onto a more positive outlook, I'm ready and looking forward to my first day of work at my first job next week! Cheers to pencil skirts, high heels and anything that spells c-o-r-p-o-r-a-t-e!

End of academic life

Contrary to the rest of my peers who felt nostalgic or even a tinge of sadness to part with their academic life or experience, I was pretty much neutral from saying goodbye to my 16 years of education journey. It wasn't that the feeling of graduating hasn't sunk in yet, it was just ... nothing. When my last exam paper was handed in, there was no exceptional exhilaration or sadness. Probably just a rush of relief that I'm finally done and over with the education system.

It's no longer a secret that I only have regrets for my education journey. Of not being smart enough, of not being hardworking enough, and of being average. Despite not being able to fit in, I'm still thankful for all the opportunities given to me. Nevertheless, it has all come to an end. That said, as with the harsh reality of working life, I do pray I can accomplish something bigger, something better!

Adjusting my life back from a traveler to being a student in an ever elitist university wasn't as difficult as I thought, perhaps because I was in my graduating semester and I couldn't give two hoots about the competitive system already. The unbearable weather still stays, I can't reiterate how much I miss the winter and snow in Europe!

I never expect myself to go on a short getaway so soon, considering how much I've spent over the past 5 months and how I really ought to settle my heart down and do some serious mapping for my future. It was such a blessing that I have initiative friends who made this Bintan trip happen! It was a short 3 days and we did nothing except to bask in the sun, take in the scenic view, enjoy the sea breeze and laze around at the pool - too good to be true considering it was mid-semester week!

Home Sweet Home

5 months of traveling, independence and freedom, I must say it was a tough emotional struggle when it's time to pack up and go home. I know there was little opportunity to have the luxury to travel around the globe like this again. It was truly a one in a lifetime experience. Nevertheless, I also know how dearly I was missed by my parents, and there's of course the responsibility of going back to school (after skipping two weeks of classes).

Yet, whatever (little) anticipation I had of going back to this sunny island was dismissed when my luggage didn't appear at the airport conveyor belt when I touched down in Singapore. From jokingly laughing at myself that my luggage must be too heavy, to impatiently shifting the weight of my feet, to cursing and swearing silently, to desperate moments of praying, to ... despair.

ALL the 5 months worth of memories containing my Europe travels were gone. To me, it's not about those tangible belongings like my DSLR camera and handphone (which I stupidly left in my luggage in order to squeeze more things into my hand carry). Rather, it's souvenirs for my family and friends, little momentos I got for myself and ALL THE PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE MEMORY CARD. How could I ever be compensated for that, even if I file for insurance claims? I was so looking forward to seeing the happy expressions on my friends' faces on receiving their souvenirs, but no, that's not gonna happen already. It certainly didn't help that my parents chided me for being "careless". Felt like I was blamed for something that wasn't entirely my fault, no?

/edit So I got my luggage back intact after a day's delay - it was sadly being left behind in Shanghai when I transited there. Thanks to everyone who showed much concern, encouragement and gave me hope when I was at the brink of giving up!

It was a crazy idea to begin with, to forfeit our return ticket from Milan back to Singapore and flew to Tokyo instead, but we did!

One of the highlights of our Tokyo trip besides the crazy shopping bargains at Shibuya/Harajuku during the Japanese New Year holiday, praying and writing our wishes at Meiji shrine, doing cheap thrills like overspending on UFO catcher machines just to get the cutest soft toys and anime collectibles at Akihabara, eating oishii authentic Japanese food, is of course, TOKYO DISNEYLAND!

I wouldn't exchange anything for this once in a lifetime opportunity, really. This study exchange program has been nothing but spectacular. It's more than just a dream come true.

I still remember how I was compelled to reject my offer last semester due to parents' concerns, even though deep down I knew I really wanted it. And how I applied for exchange again this semester, but had to be taken to the second round. It was such a tormentous wait before the result was released, but at the end of the day, I got it. Everything seemed to be planned- despite the emotional turmoils, I still managed to get my second internship and a study exchange program to Europe. It was a much needed break for me, away from school, and away from Singapore.

Then came the daunting uncertainties. Of whether I could step out of my comfort zone, be independent, get along with my exchange partner whom I didn't know of his existence prior to exchange, settle accommodation with him, and the list goes on. Yet, all worries were unfounded as everything was sorted out one by one when the time came.

I love everything about exchange. I love being independent and being in control of myself. Learning and experimenting how to cook with the limited ingredients found in the university town's supermarket is just so satisfying (minus cleaning but we have a dishwasher!). I love washing my clothes and how fresh and nice they smell after that (with the help of a washing machine!). Living in a non English-speaking environment and attempting to speak with the locals in Italian was challenging and fun at the same time. I didn't like school and my timetable, but studying in a different culture was all part of the exchange experience and I'm glad I have forged friendships with classmates of different nationalities and dynamics. And of course, the best thing about exchange- travelling. Europe was awesome. I've heard so much about this beautiful continent, and after seeing all these amazing sights and creations myself, I must say I'm even more intrigued by the blend of old and modern architecture of grandeur and enigma. Just learning and immersing into the countries and cities, appreciating their culture and living like the locals, was a joy in itself!

2010 has been a blast. There's a balance of study, work and play- 4 months of studying, 3 months of working and 5 months of playing, and I've enjoyed myself tremendously. Cheers to 2010, may 2011 be an even better year ahead!

Xmas in Paris!

Paris, the city I've always been dying to go since I don't know when. When I knew that my exchange destination was Italy and I would be travelling around Europe, I told myself the first city I would travel out of Italy must be Paris. Little did I know that it became my last trip for my 2010 travels instead, ending exchange on a high note! As compared to our past trips to other cities where we only spent a weekend or at most 3 days in one city, we spent a grand total of 7 days in Paris! For once, we had the luxury to learn more about the history and culture, as well as observe the people and their lifestyle, instead of merely doing a touch-and-go of the city.

I must admit that I was a little disappointed with Paris initially, probably due to the bad weather that was plaguing majority of Europe. On the first day when we arrived in Paris, the skies were so dark and gloomy that we couldn't even see the tip of the Eiffel Tower. And the very next day, it was raining ice (which was damn painful when it hits your face) and totally dampened our spirits while walking along Champs Elysees and Christmas Marché de Noel. The worst has yet to come as we were supposed to meet a friend but her flights were constantly being cancelled due to the snowstorm and almost couldn't make it in time to Paris for Christmas. Thankfully, just when I started to think that what people say about Paris being "romantic" and "beautiful" was just a facade, things started picking up- the skies cleared and sun was out, our friend finally made it to Paris, we had our Christmas dinner and gift exchange, people we met were nice and not snobbish, Je T'aime Paris!

London was amazing! It felt so good to be back in a English-speaking country again and I absolutely love the British accent! Even though the sightseeing attractions fell short of expectations, London is a happening city with excellent shopping, lovely people, awesome musicals and good food. I wouldn't mind visiting London over and over again or even living there just because there're so many things to do, especially if you're a Manchester United or Liverpool fan- you can almost visit Old Trafford or Anfield as and when there are matches! It's so accessible to venture out to other cities in UK too!

The highlight of the trip was Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. It was the best Christmas carnival I've been to- completed with rides and an ice skating rink! As the wind was too strong and we were already freezing in the cold, we decided against going up the rides and chose to ice skate. It was yet another experience for me because I haven't ice skate since secondary school days! Skating on real ice was exhilarating! I would want to have a go at it again even though I'm a noob at it!

I was really excited about the girls stopping by Milan for a short stay over before embarking on the rest of their Italy trip! I miss having girly fun like heart-to-heart talks, gossips, giggles, taking crazy pictures and the things you can only do with your girlfriends so much! Besides, it's always welcoming to have more company in our too-big-for-two apartment. Wish I wasn't bogged down by school at this time and we have more time together!

Winter Wonderland in Annecy!

While in Lyon it was snowing lightly with only small specks of snow falling, the entire ground in Annecy was filled white with snow! It was winter wonderland for us, where we trudged happily in the snow, had snowball fights, built a huge snowman, made snow angels and behaved like little kids who have never seen snow before. Annecy is amazing, it's a small little city but its so beautiful and picturesque, especially its lake with the Alps in the backdrop. It was really a blessing that we decided to make a trip down to Annecy from Lyon, what an awesome experience not to be missed!

Despite my anticipation for Paris, my first footprint in France was not in Paris, but in the second largest city of France, Lyon. I travelled alone for the first time and it was quite an exciting adventure on its own! Talked to two interesting Philippinos while taking a train down to Lyon from Milan, journey got delayed due to the snow, reached Lyon St Exupery station late, could not purchase the shuttle tickets to Lyon Part Dieu station from the self-help machine, managed to seek help from a friendly stranger given the language barrier, finally reached Lyon Part Dieu station, ran for the metro which closes at midnight (it was 11.45pm when I reached), did not have change to buy my metro ticket, thought I was doomed before I FINALLY met Sherlyn!

Since my purpose of the trip was to meet Sherlyn (whom I finally got to meet on exchange after many attempts!), I must admit I had little knowledge about Lyon and little expectations prior to the trip. However, the city did not disappoint, and I really enjoyed my trip to Lyon and Annecy a lot. I experienced snow in Lyon for the first time in my life, and the feeling was so, so surreal! The touch of snow felt so soft and despite the cold, I don't think my excitement will die down anytime soon. :) This trip was also the first time I travelled with so many people - a huge group of 9, and I must say it makes travelling a lot livelier and more fun. Since Lyon is also known as the gastronomical capital of France, we ate a lot! We watched an Indie live band concert too - Arcade Fire was rocking the house down that night!

People always say, "Your exchange in Europe will not be complete if you don't get pickpocketed in Barcelona." Lucky or not, my exchange partner could actually strike that off the list. It was also a pity we didn't have time to explore more of Barcelona because the weather was really great at about 19 degrees, which was certainly welcoming for a change! Imagine being able to wear slippers and shorts and go to the beach!

BUT. I'm now proud to say I've watched a football match at Barcelona Camp Nou! It was really an awesome experience for me- I've always been a Spain supporter (yay to our newly crowned World Cup Champion!), so to be able to watch a match in Spain itself is like a little dream come true! Seeing world famous football players like Messi and Villa do their dribbles, passes and tricks up close in real life felt really surreal (would be perfect if I get to see Torres!).

We managed to get tickets for the Barcelona FC versus Vilareal match with pretty good seats- we were seated really near one of the goal posts, so for the second half of the match, we got a really clear view of Barcelona's goals! The boys were really hyped up about the match, excitedly shopping for their favorite players' jerseys, beanies and scarfs at the merchandise store before the match! The atmosphere was really different when you were there at Camp Nou itself, everyone was so passionate about the game and the team they support (although majority of the audience are Barcelona FC fans). We clapped, we cheered along, we got mad when the players missed the opportunity to score, we waved the white handkerchiefs when the referee underperformed. When Messi scored, everyone did the 'kowtow' action and shouted "Messi! Messi! Messi!". Villa is a rising star, he was everywhere in the field and put up a good performance. It was a goal-filled match with the final score of 3-1, a worthwhile match to watch! I could imagine how the crowd would be like at the Barcelona FC versus Real Madrid match, it's gonna be the match that everyone is looking forward to!

We were in Brussels and Bruges for the weekend! I like Belgium, it is really a nice country to chillax and indulge yourselves with their chocolates, waffles and fries! The weather is turning cold though, wind was awfully chilly during our visit!

Japan Anime Live @ Düsseldorf

Even though it's an irony that I'm watching Japan Anime Live in Düsseldorf when the tour is stopping over in Milan and some other Italian cities in November, I would be sorely disappointed if I were to miss the event as I'll be traveling out of Italy during the scheduled tour dates. We bought the train tickets only two days before the event in Düsseldorf at the spur of the moment, without making prior purchase of the JAL tickets!

We took a huge leap of faith and wasn't disappointed!

I think we spent more time traveling to Düsseldorf (more than 12 hours of uncomfortable train journey for a SINGLE trip, meaning 24 hours of traveling in total!) than being in the city itself, but it was well worth it and certainly an experience to remember! It's quite amazing how Japanese anime culture has such influence globally, even over at the other side of the globe. You really got to marvel at how much courage the Europeans have, giving their go at cosplaying even though it's not widely accepted in their countries.

When it is not just pizza and pasta

I was so sick of eating pizza, pasta and panini within the first week of arriving in Italy and have been craving so badly for Japanese and Chinese food everyday since. Now in Castellanza, a good 35 minutes train ride from Milan, grocery shopping pretty much sums up our entertainment here and we have plenty of time at home to experiment (with the blessings of a dishwater to clear our mess).

First up, what we do with our favorite eggs:

The first time we cooked the soup, we were invited by our neighbors who are also students of LIUC to have dinner with them. They would be cooking pasta, so we thought it would be nice to let them try some Chinese soup instead of the starchy instant pack soup that they usually drink. Imagine our anticipation since we haven't had home-cooked soup ever since we came and the hours we painstakingly took to boil the soup, and I must stress (there is no better way of saying it), till the soup has absorbed all essence of the ingredients. When the soup was served, the first thing that our friendly neighbors did was to add GRATED CHEESE and SALT to the soup. FML. I think the expressions on our face were priceless.

Sorry to disappoint if you think I churned out the above dishes. My only contribution was to peel garlics and peel potatoes, and at best, during our lazy days, cook pasta (without the sauce). I will improve, I promise!

Our last destination was to Como, and gosh, I fell in love with the place the moment I reached there and immediately regretted not allocating more time for this gorgeous place. It is like a little paradise of its own, with clear waters and awesome sea view of Lake Como, especially since it is of close proximity to the Alps. We spent an entire day on the sea, and only managed to cover a quarter of the entire lake! Definitely coming back again for more and perhaps the next time, the mountains would be snow capped and frosted!

It was a relief to leave smokin' Rome and travel north to Florence. Even down to the last moment, we were still not spared by the heat as the air conditioner in our train carriage was not working, which made it the most stuffy and uncomfortable 3 hours I have ever endured!

I have heard how scenic the Tuscany region in Italy is with its beautiful landscapes, and being the capital city of Tuscany, Florence certainly did not disappoint. We took a more laid back approach in Florence, with the first day spent at the designer outlet factory stores. Given my love for hairbands, I bought my first branded purchase on exchange! The panoramic view of Florence at Piazzale Michelangelo was breathtaking, and on the same evening, we caught the sunset by the river. It was a pity we didn't have time to cover more, especially the vineyards, since it is currently the harvesting of the grapes season now. Would definitely want to visit them during semester!

I had rather high expectations for Rome after hearing so much about the capital of Italy, but I guess the heat in Rome probably drained my enthusiasm and energy level away. The weather was extremely hot that it was unbearable, especially since we had to walk long distances on the uneven roads of Italy without any shelter. I am not a fan of archaeological research, so the Colosseum and Palatino did not rouse much excitement in me, which was quite unfortunate given all the history and hype about it. I was blown away by the magnificence of the Vatican City though, the Renaissance architecture and art was really impressive! And of course being able to visit the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps personally was a huge favor to me!

Our two weeks backpacking trip in Italy kickstarted off with Venice. The weather was sunny but makes a great setting for awesome photos, and we were also constantly blessed with cool breeze since we were surrounded by waters. Venice, being the city of canals, bridges, gondolas and masks is really beautiful. Many a times after sightseeing, we simply chose a nice looking restaurant, order a pasta and a beer, and people watch for hours. It was a good three days spent just admiring the architecture, picturesque scenery and soaking in the Venetian culture!

Greetings from Milano!

The 17 hours flight including 4 hours of transit in Dubai was unbearable really, even though the 13 hours of flying time was nicely split into 7 and 6 hours. We were just too restless to be excited by Emirates' in-flight entertainment or food which I must admit had pretty good standards. Definitely not a good long-haul flight experience for me.

We cabbed all the way down to our apartment from the airport since it was impossible for our poor guy here to carry 60kg worth of luggages. I could swear the meter jumped faster than my heartbeat. The cab fare was close to a freaking 100 euros for an estimated half hour ride!

The apartment is small but cosy enough for two, and I guess I can really settle down anywhere as long as there's unlimited internet access!

12 weeks of internship, finally over!

It was an unexpected surprise, to be able to make my first baby step into a bank. Being my penultimate year, this year's internship application was way more competitive than that of last year's. While I had gotten my internship offer by March last year, this year's application process left me feeling disheartened and bleak. To be able to get this internship, I really got to count my blessings for it.

To be honest, as much as I wanted to, this internship wasn't a steep learning curve for me, but I have learnt that not all bank positions are glamourous and work-life balance is REALLY important (at least to me). As always, it was the people whom made work more bearable. 12 weeks, when you think about it, is really pretty long. That constitutes to a quarter of a year! And the fact that I'm going on exchange two weeks after my internship made the counting down process even more torturous. Yet, even though I was the only intern left in my department after the 8th week, I am really thankful for the group of fresh graduates colleagues who made me look forward to lunch everyday despite going to the same place and eating the same few dishes over and over again, as well as to laugh myself silly at the screen while IM-ing them in our conference chats. They know interns like me come and go, but they still put heart in making my internship a better experience. Aww!

As with last year, this year's birthday also falls during my internship stint, where many of my friends are interning as well. Being in the same position as them, I know exactly how it feels to be mentally exhausted after work. In fact, I must admit I sulked a lil over how I had to push myself to go out every night for celebrations even though I am tired, just because this internship has robbed away all my day time.

Yet for the same reason, I felt so much love from my friends, because I know they had specially taken their time off their precious after-working hours just to celebrate my birthday with me. These dinner celebrations, though simple, have certainly warmed my heart. I could see all their efforts from how they chose japanese cuisine over others and how they have tried to make the dinners less like a meet up or gathering even though I really don't mind at all. And my colleagues whom I knew for less than 3 months but still made me feel special and treated me like their little sister. All the smses, facebook wishes… I will remember. And the presents which coincidentally were all gotten for my overseas exchange, I will certainly fully utilize it! Thank you each and every one who made my 22 such a heartfelt one! :)

Things couldn't get any better now. I've got my exchange and internship by grace- despite everything, I did get what I prayed for in the end. :) Never felt so blessed!

Gonna do a shoutout here to everyone since if you're still reading this space, you must have cared to a certain extent. Thanks everyone! Whether you've been physically there for me or giving me moral support or just saying a lil prayer, thank you for bearing the antagonizing wait with me all these while!

It has been a long, torturous wait. And an emotional roller-coaster ride.

In fact just yesterday, less than 24 hours ago, I had a strong inkling that the email would come. I thought the intuition felt pretty strong. But as the clock ticked past 6 in the evening and signalled after office hours, I knew I was disappointed again.

I even thought to myself, maybe all these waiting and agony isn't going to be worth it. Maybe I shouldn't be giving myself pep talks and ignoring the sinking feeling I've been feeling all these while. It's not like I don't know how few placements there are in the second round. I felt like a big fool, waking up everyday to check my mail religiously and have my phone 24/7 by my side so that I won't miss any calls. And as weeks passed, the status still remain questionable.

And then the email came today when I least expected it.

Last night was.. terrible.

A part of me was clinging on to some hope. Yet while I desperately fished for any kind of affirmation from everyone, another part of me already knew the outcome. When the final verdict came, I did feel my heart sank but that moment was not too hard to bear.

Because it all just seemed too familiar.

It actually felt like another routine.

Disappointments after disappointments. I'm torn, I'm worn out, I'm helpless already. I don't know how much more of these rejections I could handle anymore. Can I not be the one to pick up broken pieces anymore?

I need everything to stop crumbling. I need a miracle.

And maybe.. I need a hug.

Looking back 2009 in retrospect, it almost seemed like 2009 was a rather forgettable year, despite an entire year of 21st birthday parties and celebrations. Of course, I am still thankful for the people who are still in my life, people who recently entered my life and made the year more bearable, and certain events which made me learn and grow. Yet, there was just something inside me that wanted more- something else and something different.

Since it was the year that marked my independence as well as my route to adulthood and responsibility, I would say I did set out to make 2009 a positive bang. I don't want to be just a common face. I tried to improve, change, give myself pep talks, but sadly it wasn't any different. I should know by now that with expectations come disappointments and some things are perhaps simply beyond my control. However, like what a friend said, as we grow older, years just keep rolling and we cannot segment them anymore. We shouldn't keep ourselves on our toes all the time and try to accomplish everything within a year's span. So come 2010, I am going to quit setting resolutions and pray only for a better year. It's going to be an important and exciting year for me, and I know it. :)

Back from 上海、无锡、苏州 and 杭州!

The business study trip to the YRD region was certainly an enriching learning experience. We visited more than 10 companies in total. It was certainly a privilege and eye-opener having able to have exclusive access to companies, especially reputable ones like OCBC, Stone Forest, APB, GM Motors, Ramatex, and we were even given the opportunity to tour around their manufacturing plants. Getting to know and exchange namecards with VIPs whom I'll never foresee myself interacting with during the three networking dinners. Went to the Expo 2010 Exhibition Centre which showcases impressive pavilion structures of the participating countries. Felt that there was so much to learn, so much to absorb within 10 days.

Yet there's always the flip side. Disappointing moments where you see your classmates engaged in class politics during meals and networking dinners, and how it became a prisoner's dilemma for your group to follow suit. If our school has already been notoriously known for its "competitiveness" within the campus itself, then this trip probably took it to greater heights. To me, no doubt the different dynamics and composition of the class already made us difficult to bond, it was the condone of such actions that result in the high barriers throughout the trip. Or perhaps it was just my group who felt that way, since the rest seemed to be able to mingle along just fine.

I would say I liked Suzhou the best and Shanghai the least. Perhaps my expectations was too high after hearing from friends who interned in Shanghai, that it became disappointing when I was actually there. Very developed city especially with the incoming Expo 2010, but sadly in my words, uncivilized people were aplenty. The gap was just too great to overcome. In the end, I felt like if people are rude, I will "just rude back". There was simply no other way. Suzhou was beautiful. People are genuinely nice and offer to help you out of kindness. Simplicity still works best for me.

Travelled to Hangzhou for 西湖. Beautiful, picturesque scenery even in the foggy and cold weather which took a further dip. Love the weather even though the wind could be unbearable at times!

It wasn't the most memorable trip- in fact I would think other business study trips would be a lot more fun. But I must say I learnt a lot from this trip even though they were more bad than good- made me grew a little I think!

Mum's Recovery

Mum is recovering well and words can't express how relieved and thankful I am that she's doing fine! For the past two weeks after her operation, I had to shuffle between school and home, making sure her meals are taken care of and trying to keep her company as much as possible. I must admit it wasn't an easy feat, especially when it was the busiest period of the semester and project meetings weren't exactly smoothsailing. On top of that, my mum's an independent mum so I had to bear with her own frustrations when I was already trying to do my best at things I'm not good at. It was a trying two weeks, testing my patience and time management. There were times when I felt I've reached my limits, when I had to swallow my pride and when I had to give up my personal time. Yet, it was all worth it to see her stitches removed, to see her recovering and to see her slowly being able to stand on her feet again, slowly but surely. I pray for her full recovery soon!

A lil' Chinatown adventure

Due to close proximity, Serangoon Gardens has been one of my frequent hangouts. Gotta love that place for Astons, Frolick and Dessert Bowl (for its Durian Mousse!). There's also Chompchomp for good hawker food, but personally I think it is overrated with insufficient space and marked-up prices. Why not head to Chinatown, for the same, if not more variety of local delights, and at more affordable prices?

So on a Monday evening, we headed down for a lil Chinatown adventure:

The xiaolongbaos that I craved everytime during my internship days! Made and steamed only upon ordering. I still remember the interns used to leave slightly earlier before lunchtime just to walk the further distance and queue for them before the lunchtime crowd.

We were supposed to end our food galore with yummy traditional dessert but my sense of direction really failed me - I could only remember the route if we were to walk from my workplace. We were so close yet we just couldn't find any dessert shop, had to settle for Nectarie @ Clarke Quay but all was still good!

To go or not to go

I just rejected my exchange offer to Europe, less than an hour ago.

I must say, I haven't been faced with such a tough decision in awhile. Felt like I just went through a rough patch even though it only involves one decision to make. To go or not to go.

What an irony really. Just a few weeks ago I was praying so hard I'll get my Europe exchange. Yet when I got the offer, I wished I hadn't. Life really does love to poke fun at us isn't it. I wish the decision could be as simple as either accept or reject. It's not. Parent's concerns, cost of living, company, weather... so many factors to consider.

Did the weighing of my options and immediately felt more confused. It almost seemed as though the number of reasons I should go for the exchange have balanced the number of reasons why I should not go. It felt like I got stuck deeper in the rut just thinking about it. It's like I'm fighting a battle with all my inner thoughts running wild at the same time. Haven't felt like expressing myself with a :( in a long time.

I don't know if I've made the right choice by giving it up, since it's the last spring exchange I could apply for. I'm not even sure whether there is a right or wrong choice. I guess if I'd really wanted to go for this, I would have accepted without much thoughts. The fact that I was upset for the past couple of days probably imply that there's something inside me that's holding me back. Truthfully, I'm fine with going or not going. Maybe I should have been more courageous instead of feeling apprehensive about the uncertainties. Maybe I'm stupid for giving this up... Whatever it is, I just hope I will never regret this decision down the road.

Batam Getaway

Back from Batam! What an awesome trip!

Batam was certainly more commercialized than I expected. Everything can be paid using SGD and is more often than not more expensive than the prices in Singapore (except for groceries). I overestimated on my expenses, which was a pity that I couldn't try para-sailing. Would have been a great experience! Other than that, the fortunately chosen atas place, good food and wonderful company have already made the trip an awesome one!

In summary:
The paranoia of getting robbed/raped, (painful) massage, grocery shopping with a trolley full of Indomee and Tango, the long walk to Waterfront with incessant annoying honkings, good food, SEA SPORTS with our bananaboat capsizing, "trespassing" to another hotel, lazing in the pool, KTV session, moment of truth/confession/adding value to knowing each other better, potato couching together... So much fun, laughter and memories contained within a 3d2n trip. ♥

People say going on a trip with people other than your family is risky. It's almost like living together with them - you get to see their true personality, their living habits, everything from unglamourous to ugly. Unlike your own family members who are always forgiving and accepting, there are couples who break up or quarrel over a supposedly romantic getaway, or best friends who stop talking to each other. There are also successful trips where you grow closer with your travel companions because of the memories forged during the trip, and understand them better. And I'm glad I went on a successful one with my GGs :)

Internship has finally come to an end, with mixed and lingering feelings.

As much as I was counting down to my last day of internship, I know I'll miss my fellow interns in the days to come. It was a good 11 weeks of friendship and bonding. The friendships forged, the exchange of perspectives across universities and all the fun times we shared, have certainly contributed greatly to making my internship a memorable one.

For now, it's a short two weeks before school commences. Strangely, the past 4 months of summer break felt way shorter as compared to the previous one. I almost didn't expect myself to be able to get away from the city with my internship and the H1N1 virus still spreading but yes, I'm going on a short holiday! Summer's still good to me :) Till I come back!

Ambience and food was fantanstic. Very worth it despite the limited variety because the food made up for it- drunken prawns, oysters, sashimi, black pepper crabs were simply fresh and divine. They serve Häagen-Dazs ice cream too! Highly recommended to go while promotion lasts.

Surprise party!
A big thumbs up to my fellow interns who took my word seriously, planned the entire birthday celebration, and made sure I was genuinely surprised. Though I did suspect they had something up their sleeves, I would never have expected them to liase with my mom and hold the party at my own condominium's function room! The surprise party has certainly exceeded what 8-week friends will do, especially since Serangoon isn't the most convenient place to go to. Thank you!
